Scientific discoveries as cultural displays: a further test of Miller's courtship model.

چکیده
The biographies of 280 scientists demonstrate that the age distribution of their career peaks is identical to those of jazz musicians, painters, and writers, and that this universal age profile holds only among scientists who were married some time in their lives. I interpret this as support for Miller's cultural display model in an evolutionarily novel environment.

Multiple male traits interact: attractive bower decorations facilitate attractive behavioural displays in satin bowerbirds.
Sexually selected male courtship displays often involve multiple behavioural and physical traits, but little is known about the function of different traits in mate choice. Here, we examine female courtship behaviours to learn how male traits interact to influence female mating decisions. In satin bowerbirds (Ptilonorhynchus violaceus), successful males give highly aggressive, intense behaviour...
متن کاملMale satin bowerbirds, Ptilonorhynchus violaceus, adjust their display intensity in response to female startling: an experiment with robotic females
Females of many species preferentially mate with males that produce courtship displays at a high intensity or rate; however, males do not always display at their maximum intensity during courtship. Evidence suggests that this behaviour may be adaptive in satin bowerbirds, because overly intense displays can disrupt courtship by startling females. Females signal the display intensity that they w...
متن کاملTap dancing birds: the multimodal mutual courtship display of males and females in a socially monogamous songbird
According to classical sexual selection theory, complex multimodal courtship displays have evolved in males through female choice. While it is well-known that socially monogamous songbird males sing to attract females, we report here the first example of a multimodal dance display that is not a uniquely male trait in these birds. In the blue-capped cordon-bleu (Uraeginthus cyanocephalus), a soc...
متن کاملPhysiological Costs of Repetitive Courtship Displays in Cockroaches Handicap Locomotor Performance
Courtship displays are typically thought to have evolved via female choice, whereby females select mates based on the characteristics of a display that is expected to honestly reflect some aspect of the male's quality. Honesty is typically enforced by mechanistic costs and constraints that limit the level at which a display can be performed. It is becoming increasingly apparent that these costs...
متن کاملThe relative cost of using luminescence for sex and defense: light budgets in cypridinid ostracods.
Luminescent signals can be used by animals for a number of purposes, including courtship and defense, sometimes by the same individual. However, the relative costs of producing these different behaviors are largely unknown. In the marine ostracod Photeros annecohenae, males utilize extracellular luminescence for complex courtship displays, and both males and females luminesce as a predation def...
